CASE STUDY: Greenfield Village - Liberty Craftsworks
Objective
To update Greenfield Village a part of The Henry Ford to become a more cohesive and park-like experience for visitors; and create new shopping experiences in addition to the Main Store. Create a unique supplemental retail opportunity in the newly created historic district called Liberty Craftworks.
Result
Creating an entrance portal into the renovated crafts and trade attraction zone at Greenfield Village, the new building presents opportunities as a grand entrance statement and photo op center. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, a unique style and taste level is emulated in the architecture of the building and provides park visitors a first glimpse of the beautifully landscaped artisan community.
Design Elements
- A key element of the building is a covered walkway, featuring an open-window lookout where visitors can enjoy the vista over a gristmill paddle wheel or catch a glimpse into the overscaled window that previews the merchandise inside.
- The Arts and Crafts-inspired interior provides a residential feel in its finishes and color palette, although warm and simple in its sophistication and detailing, the store exudes richness in its approach to design and style.
- The layout of the store supports key category stories and adapts to meet the constant need for freshening of product and presentation - Porcelain tile inset with carpeting creates product story zones.
- Custom designed hexagon and square tables of cherry and red mahogany are layered to provide tremendous options for flexibility, while custom cabinets and recessed niches display the Village’s unique craft and gift items.
- A warm color palette of moss and goldenrod and chandeliers reminiscent of the turn-of-the-century lends to the historical period feel.
